ABSTRACT - Malacca-Portuguese Language and Heritage preservation, documentation and
development

My Choice of Language Documentation for the Malacca Portuguese Creole Community has been a long
journey of 20years.
Firstly, none of the older members of the Community believe that it is moribund or is now listed
as 'Endangered' They say
it has lasted for 500 years and it will be 'SPOKEN' for another 500 years. Although they speak with
conviction and soul there are ' Distracting forces'.
Fortunately from among the more discerning members of the community, especially from among the
women, a clear and different opinion
has surfaced.
They want to revive the 'old language' and make it more conducive to unification of ALL Malaysian-
Eurasians. This will allow them to be readily distinguishable
as a unique race with a unique Culture, Language and Heritage. This is the level, perspective and role
that documenting the Papiah Kristang language will play
in the years ahead. The Malaysian-Eurasian Community gets its strength, perseverance and diplomacy
from the Portuguese. They left us with a unique, culture, customs and traditions and a' LANGUAGE
BORN OUT OF NECESSITY.' In all this, the women of the community are going to play a major role.

ABSTRATO – O Crioulo Português de Malaca, preservação de Herança, documentação e
desenvolvimento

A minha Escolha de Documentação Linguística para o Crioulo da Comunidade Portuguesa de Malaca foi
uma viagem longa de 20 anos.

Em primeiro lugar, nenhum dos membros mais velhos da Comunidade do Bairro Português de Malaca
acredita que está moribundo ou que está agora 'ameaçado de extinção' . Dizem que sobreviveu durante
500 anos e que 'SERÁ FALADO' por outros 500 anos. Embora falem com alma e convicçâo existem '
Forças desviantes’.

Felizmente de entre os membros mais discernentes da comunidade, especialmente de entre as
mulheres, surgiu uma opinião diferente e clara.

Querem ressuscitar este ‘velho Crioulo' e torná-lo mais conducente à unificação de TODOS os
Euroasiáticos da Malásia. Isto permitirá distingui-los como uma raça única com uma Cultura rara,
Linguagem e Herança. Este é o nível, perspectiva e papel que a documentaçâo do Crioulo Papiah
Kristang jogará nos anos adiante. A Comunidade de Euroasiáticos da Malásia recebe a sua força,
perseverança e diplomacia dos Portugueses. Eles deixaram-nos com uma cultura rara, costumes e
tradições e um' CRIOULO NASCIDO POR NECESSIDADE.' Em tudo isto, as mulheres da comunidade
jogarão um papel importante.
